BOOTS ON THE GROUND
Donation project with mission to provide 10,000 fire-retardant boots
After the 24th of February, life in Ukraine changed.
Unprepared for the massive attacks, Ukraine’s firefighters and first-responders suddenly faced a tremendous number of fires everywhere.
As the need for and the number of firefighting rescue teams increased, people worked without proper equipment—especially boots—the first point of contact with the hot rubble. Rescuers often wore sports shoes that melted, severely injuring their feet
WHAT WE DO
Seeking donations to provide Ukraine’s firefighters with protective boots and safety gear
As the danger and intensity of Firefighter duties has increased, they have exhausted their fire-retardant protective gear, especially boots.
We propose to remedy this. Firefighter’s protective boots cost €200/pair, and as of May 2022, the Ukrainian firefighters need 10,000 pairs of fire-retardant footwear.
Project created with full support from the State Emergency Service in Ukraine.

WHO WE ARE
Maryna and her friends
Who is Maryna?
Two days after Russia invaded, Maryna Sergiyenko fled Bucha to save her family, courageously loading her daughters, their dog, and some belongings into her car. After driving to the Polish border, she met a friend who helped her get to Paris and connected her with the American Women’s Group of Paris. Maryna’s concern for the firefighters back in Bucha working so hard to protect her homeland inspired this project. In concert with American women she befriended in Paris, Maryna put her immense organisational expertise to work to bring Boots on the Ground to fruition.

Together, with the support of her friends in Paris, the Ukrainian diaspora, and the firefighters on the ground in Bucha, Maryna launched “Boots on the Ground,” a fundraising initiative to raise money for firefighter’s protective boots, which cost €200 a pair.
She said: “This is a way to help Ukraine. I am not just sitting in Paris in a nice place. I really feel this is how I can participate in this, and not to be separated from what is happening there.”
“It is literally boots on the ground – it’s the basic thing they need to do their job.”
